This weekend Brian and I are celebrating our first wedding anniversary. I cannot believe that it has been a year already! I get all sappy thinking about our wedding day. It was perfection- so cliché but it really was the most magical day of my life. Marrying that man was the best decision I have ever made. I’m so grateful to be his wife. Like seriously…SO grateful.

Happy Anniversary, my love! You are the keel to my sail.

back from a dreamy weekend in Palm Springs

27 May

We’re back from a seriously fun weekend in Palm Springs celebrating our dear friend Rachel an PJ’s wedding. It was dreamy- every single detail was perfection. It’s such a joy to see people you love so happy. Today feels like my first official day back to reality, since last week was spent in a haze of jetlag, while gearing up for this wedding. So I’m spending the day getting my ducks in a row. I’m also spending the day drinking a ton of green juices (seriously, between our honeymoon and this past weekend all that we’ve done for five weeks is eat whatever and drink whatever we want…it has to stop), writing (so happy to get back to my writing- first Vietnam honeymoon post coming tomorrow morning!) and hopefully getting to a yoga class. Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! Here’s a few snapshots from the wedding…

Hellllllllo weekend. I’m SO very happy that you have arrived because you are going to be a good one. Tonight Brian and I are having a date night- we have three different restaurants in mind that we could possibly hit up. It’s between Mexican, Pho and Cuban. Tomorrow during the day I’m taking my little sister Ana on our second date….miniature golfing here we come! Tomorrow night we are having two of our favorite couples over for our monthly dinner club…we usually go out and try new restaurants but this time we are staying in because we have a new addition to the group…baby Margot!!! Hopefully Margot likes pizza and wine. And Sunday Brian and I are going to tackle booking hotels for our honeymoon and probably just be cuddly at home all day.

reading….The Goldfinch for a book club that I started recently. I have been falling behind on my reading and needed a little pick me up. I used to read every night when I got in bed but now I seem to fall asleep on the couch while we watch tv. Pathetic! There was a time not too long ago when I didn’t even own a tv! I got so much more done. I also love hanging with my fabulous girlfriends and will find any excuse to have them all in one room, so I thought…I should start a book club! Our first meeting March 22nd. Are any of you guys in book clubs? Do you have any tips on how to throw a fabulous one? Or any great questions to ask?

working on…writing various personal essays. I’ve written four in the past few weeks. I wrote one about the body image issues I developed after ten years working as a professional fit model, one about an interesting encounter I had with a neighbor, one about our trek through Nepal and lastly one about my seven-year battle with anxiety – which I’m happy to report I’ve been winning recently. Each essay has a life of its own and I’ve enjoyed the process of writing them. Oh and the feeling I get from putting them in a little folder entitled “finished  essays”…pure joy. Now, I plan on writing more and trying to get the others published.

watching...sadly, not much of substance lately. I’m patiently waiting for Walking Dead, House Of Cards & Grey’s Anatomy to return and in the meantime I have found myself watching episodes of The Real Housewives Of BH. I know, I know…truly embarrassing.

loving…nesting and working on home projects (I spent far too long mulling over different shades of grey for our walls. Don’t worry the perfect shade has been chosen. PHEW), planning and daydreaming about our upcoming honeymoon (I can’t wait to be away with Brian for a whole month. We so need it) Apples with almond butter (it’s becoming an everyday occurrence), my new Polaroid camera (FUN! although Frank doesn’t seem to find it too fun. He barks and hides when the picture pops out), the coral mirror that my darling husband painted for me (he’s a keeper), trying on my bridesmaid dress with Rachel for her upcoming wedding ( I LOVE it and her) & dinner dates with my beautiful pregnant girlfriend Taline ( I still can’t get it through my head that my best friend is going to become a mama. It blows my mind)

eating…paleo. I’m not strict about it everyday but I’ve been sticking to it Monday- Friday and I really feel a difference…more energy, flatter stomach, better digestion…blah…blah…blah. I’ve even gotten Brian into it. He says he likes it.

Ways in which to distract yourself while you are starving…

I’m three days into my five days of “fit into your wedding dress” green juice cleanse and I’m surviving! Truth is, day one is the worst and then it gets a bit easier. By day two I was on a high with all the energy. This doesn’t mean I’m not hungry or that I don’t have to hide in the bathroom while Brian eats his dinner every night…it just means I have more energy. I have found many ways to distract myself from the starvation the last three days….

1- researching Frank’s Halloween costume. Considering this is his first Halloween, I’m very excited. The top contenders…

thoughts? Any favorites?

2- doing wedding seating…which is a truly painful activity. I’ve had more fun at the dentist but it does pass the time when you are starving.

photo-353- watching television with my boys. All our favorite shows are back!

photo-404- organizing our kitchen to make room for all of our new wedding gifts. Seriously, it’s just insane the amount of fabulous gifts that arrive at our door each day. So blessed.

photo-385) monday night movie dates with my momma and brother. We saw “Gravity” and it was INTENSE. Made me totally forget I was starving and also gave me nightmares.

The blog world can be such a funny world! Many months ago when I was “Freshly Pressed” on WordPress, a lovely woman named Sophia found my blog. Since then we’ve become internet friends- exchanging emails on different topics and such. I always enjoy her witty, funny and thoughtful emails and comments. Cut to a month ago when she emailed me that she was coming to LA (she lives in North Carolina) for a trip and wondered if 1. I would like to meet up and 2. If Brian and I would be open to shooting some engagement photos with her (did I forget to mention she’s a talented photographer with a beautiful blog?).

I immediately thought it sounded fun. Brian on the other hand thought it sounded “not so fun”. A little known fact about Brian; he hates being in front of the camera. HATES. He much prefers being behind the camera. So he thought this whole shooting photos with a complete stranger sounded like a terrible, no-good idea. But luckily I can be persuasive and got him to agree to do it. And guess what?? Brian was proven wrong and Sophia was lovely and shooting with her was an easy, fun and comfortable experience. She even got Brian to smile- A BUNCH!

you’re getting married where?

Smogshoppe02

We picked a date and venue for our wedding! Originally I wanted to do an out-of-town wedding in the central coast of California but it ended up feeling overwhelming to coordinate. I didn’t like the idea of having to work with vendors who I had never met. We also decided we didn’t want to make all our guests travel for a weekend wedding. As special as we think our wedding is, we realize not everyone wants to travel for it! So we set our sites on finding the perfect LA venue. We wanted to find an indoor/outdoor space that wasn’t a hotel. We were both set on not getting married indoors- we want to be outside when we say “I do”.

Many months ago, before we got engaged, Brian and I were at an open house in Culver City and stumbled down the street into space called the SmogShoppe. Once a 1980’s smog check center, SmogShoppe is now a converted 6,500 square foot indoor/outdoor space. The outside is pretty nondescript with big tall cement walls covered in succulents (Brian’s favorite though), but when you walk behind the cement walls you find yourself in a magical space. There’s a big beautiful succulent garden outdoors to get married in. Inside is a huge long space with wood tables and exposed beams- it feels rustic despite not being a barn. It’s eclectic and fun. It’s the perfect place for us. At the time I said “This would be a great place to get married” not thinking it would really be were I got married.

Eight months later with a ring on my finger we chose the SmogShoppe to become man and wife, November 2013 and we are oh so excited about it!

Telling our family the name of the venue has been funny though.

My poor grandmother was like, “What? You’re getting married where??? A smog shop????”

My mother took to sending me texts that read “It’s not everyday your daughter get’s married at a smog shop.” Hysterical mother.

I’m so happy that choosing a venue and securing a date is over because that sucked. I can’t believe how fast things book up! This whole wedding business is insane! We originally wanted a September wedding but are learning to be happy with a November wedding because of this very problem. Luckily LA doesn’t get that cold that time of year. Although I would prefer to be cold in a big white heavy dress then hot. I hate being hot.

So now we attack booking everything else for the big day. Let the fun begin!
