frank halloween

Big news- I’ve purchased Franks Halloween costume. I wasn’t even thinking about his costume yet but then I saw it hanging on a rack at Petco and I knew it was the one. I was praying it would fit his funny little cinderblock body. Luckily, it fit perfectly. I’m not sure Frank enjoys it but I certainly do….and that’s all that matters, right? He’s smart enough to know that if he complies with my wishes there’s really tasty treats in his future.

weekend

20 Jul

The summer seems to be flying by at an incredible speed. It’s July 20th already? Le sigh. There are a million things I still want to accomplish this summer- a mix of work projects (I swear, I used to write on a regular basis!), personal goals (I’ve actually been doing pretty good at accomplishing these) & house projects (the list is long my friends. Top of my list is painting the walls grey and hanging art). Not to mention I would really like to make it to the beach a few more times before summer comes to a close. Although, I guess when you live in LA summer never really comes to a firm close, does it?

This weekend I…

Had the night to myself on Friday night. Brian was out for the evening with a few friends drinking beer and playing cards. Initially, I had plans to meet a few girlfriends for dinner but when those plans got pushed until next weekend I opted to stay in. I am a fan of staying in by myself. I’m a fan of doing a lot of things by myself actually. I can be such a loner! It had been a long week and I was feeling void of energy. Nothing sounded better than cozying up on the couch with Frank. So I stopped at the market on the way home from work to pick up the essentials for my party of one…a fresh bouquet of white peonies, sushi, pellegrino, trashy magazines & haagen dazs vanilla frozen yogurt. The makings of a perfect evening in my mind.

Saturday morning I had plans to meet my girlfriend Crystal for a morning hike but some very strange weather rolled into LA this weekend and it derailed that plan. I awoke Saturday morning to rain. It was such a foreign sound this time of year…well, and in general in LA lately that with all the bedroom curtains drawn I couldn’t figure out what it was at first. I was convinced it was Frank’s tiny toenails tapping on the hard wood floor until I got up to investigate and was shocked by the storm outside. The air was thick and muggy. Again, so strange. It ended up being a storm that lasted most of the day and brought with it heavy downpour, thunder and lightning. It was crazy! After abandoning the morning hike, I met some family that was in town from Kansas City (they thought our reaction to the rain was pretty funny. I had to explain that we don’t get weather around these parts often) for lunch at M Street (where I bought the massive bacon chocolate chip cookie pictured below) and then stopped for a manicure and pedicure. When I got home around four the rain was coming down really hard so Brian and I decided it was the perfect excuse to binge watch the last season of “Homeland” which we had yet to see. We literally watched the whole damn season on Saturday afternoon until the early morning hours of Sunday. Breaking only to pick up Greek take-out food for dinner. What a phenomenal season! Fucking intense. Hands down one of the best shows on television in my opinion.

On Sunday I spent the day working on a few projects- I finally redid my media kit (with my brilliant husbands help of course. Thanks, Bri!) I can’t tell you how long this has been on my to do list. An embarrassingly long time. But now it’s done and I can finally start working on putting together our fall road trip from LA to Seattle. We originally planned on taking the road trip this past spring but life got in the way so it had to be pushed to October. Which I actually think will be a pretty epic time to make the drive up the coast. Getting very excited about this trip. We wrapped up the weekend with a movie- we saw “Trainwreck” with my mom and brother. I laughed my ass off for two hours straight. That Amy Schumer is a comic genius. Not to mention she wrote the screenplay as well. I have a new crush.

weekend

This weekend was one of the most relaxing weekends I can remember in a long time. We pretty much did a whole lot of nothing for two days straight. The fact that it was grey and rainy in LA most of the weekend definitely helped. We stayed in Friday night with take-out food and watched the last few episodes of our new favorite show on Netflix “Marco Polo”. Have you seen it? It’s soooo good. This coming from a girl who isn’t normally a fan of historical television shows. We watched the entire first season in a few days- it’s safe to say that we are addicted.

Saturday we made an attempt to get out of the house and took a drive down to El Segundo to hit up a warehouse sale that Restoration Hardware was having. We are on a hunt for new lighting fixtures as well as counter stools for our kitchen island. Sadly, the sale was a total bust. They mostly had leather couches and canopy beds for sale- neither of which we are in need of. When we got home from our El Segundo adventure it was decided that we wouldn’t be leaving the house again, other than to pick up Thai food for dinner. We spent the afternoon doing stuff around the house…Brian researched how to build a desk for our office (a project that he will hopefully complete next weekend!) while I organized our kitchen cabinets and laundry room. I’m on a serious organizing kick at the moment. Maybe it’s because I’ve cut out sugar, gluten and alcohol for the month of January and need a distraction but I am an unstoppable organizing machine at the moment. Need anything organized at your house??? I’m available.

On Sunday we kept the weekend nesting theme going and spent the whole day in again. Well, other than a trip to the market to grab a few things I needed to tackle a chicken recipe for dinner that evening.  I decided it would be nice to cook dinner for Brian since I would be forcing him to sit through five hours of Golden Globe coverage.

a friendly golden globe bet... I won.

a friendly golden globe bet… I won.

Every time I make him sit through an award show I think of the first time I made him watch the Golden Globes with me and recorded some of the things he said…

“Oh look it’s Brad and Angie! Yay!” said with total disdain

“If Ryan Gosling didn’t open his mouth I think I would like him much better”

“she’s hot”

“That’s a really stupid headband” said about Michelle William’s headband

“How many other boyfriends and husbands do you think there are in the world that are being forced to watch the Golden Globes? Id love to know the number- I bet it’s big”

“Did you finish your cookie?”

“Stupid show”

“That’s a horrible dress”

“Don’t worry I’ll take a nap in a few minutes and stop talking”

Me…”Really?”

Brian…”No”

“Like Steven Spielberg needed another award”

“He looks tan!”

“That’s her husband?!”

As he grabs the controller from me he says “If we have to watch this then it should at least be on HD”

“We are watching the A team at 8 o’clock”

me….”I didn’t know you wanted to see that”

Brian…”I don’t really…I just know you don’t want to see it”

Keeping with tradition I jotted down a few things Brian could be heard muttering during this years Golden Globe awards…

“She looks super pretty!” – regarding Naomi Watts

“Wait! They’re married????” – regarding Naomi Watts & Liev Schreiber

“Yes and they have two kids.” – me

“I bet they have really attractive kids” said Brian thoughtfully

“Like he needed another way to make money.” – said with disgust in response to Ryan Seacrest wearing a suit made by his own fashion label

“He’s aged quite well.” – regarding Ethan Hawke

“My crush looks terrible.” said with shock in regards to Kate Mara

“I have no idea who he is.” – while shaking his head

“I mean, how can you not love her, right?” – regarding Emily Blunt

“You’re a woman without chardonnay, sugar or carbs…trust me I won’t take watching the Golden Globes away from you.” – said to me

“Jude law cheated on her???”

no words…just whistling…upon seeing Kate Hudson

“a portrait of my child, once a week, every week″

Every night when Brian walks through the door after work Frankie runs over to him so he can be scooped up.  Then he nuzzles his head into the crook of Brian’s neck and they proceed to hug. It’s the sweetest thing in the world. Although, I also get a bit jealous. Frank never hugs me like that- believe me I’ve tried to make him! I guess it’s their thing”.

Every morning I find Frank like this when I get out of the shower. It always makes me laugh that he prefers his head on a pillow. I swear he’s human.

inspiration, gratitude & surprises

Hello weekend! I’ve been waiting for you since Monday. I’m only kidding…well kinda. The truth is I see so little of Brian during the week with his crazy work schedule that I cherish the weekends with him. Although, we have been implementing a Wednesday date night to try to change that. Our weekend is going to be pretty mellow. Tonight we are going to see a movie- maybe Lucy? Has anyone seen it? Tomorrow morning I will most likely go to a yoga class- I haven’t gone to a class all week.! I’ve been naughty. Tomorrow afternoon we are meeting an old friend and her fiance for happy hour drinks. I’m really looking forward to reconnecting with her. Sunday we have absolutely nothing on the books- my favorite! I’m thinking maybe another yoga class then I might tackle a new recipe. I have been pinning vegetarian recipes on pinterest like a mad woman. I think it might be time to actually make one. What do you guys have planned for the weekend??

what inspired me this week?

the project 30 q&a’s on the blog this week- both Amber and Jadis are such interesting and inspiring women. I’m lucky they said yes to participating!

the connectivity of project 30. When I first started the project all the women answering the questions were people I personally knew. But in the last few months it has grown to include fabulous women I’ve never even met. This week one was even from the UK! Each one of these ladies has truly inspired me.

how to avoid the comparison game

what am I grateful for this week?

CityDog Club– I stumbled upon this amazing dog day care near us and it is a total game changer. They even have webcams set up so you can watch your dog play! When Frank got home from his day there he went straight to bed. I can’t even remember the last time Brian and I sat through dinner without Frank obnoxiously rubbing his beloved tennis ball on our feet.

my relationship with my “little sister” Briana. I plan on sharing more about her/us next week. I think the Big Brother Big Sister program is pretty amazing. I’m so grateful I followed through with it because she has been an incredible addition to my world.

what surprised me this week?

how much I enjoy eating vegetarian. I thought I would be bored but I’m not at all! The love I now have for vegetarian burritos knows no limits.
