dinner club – moroccan food!

The dinner club that we have with two other couples has been very neglected in the past few months. Originally it was supposed to be a once a month occurrence and a fun way to try a new restaurant. But between work, honeymoons & a baby the six of us have been busy and we went many many many many months without doing it. But we resurrected it!!

Instead of going out and trying a new restaurant, we decided to do a Moroccan themed pot luck dinner at our house. Why Moroccan? I don’t know…why not, right??

It was decided that the Glodney’s would take the main course, The Garahan’s would take the salad & The Rocciho’s would take the side dish & dessert, with each couple also agreeing to bring an alcoholic beverage. Good plan, huh? Brian and I settled on a Moroccan chicken dish and a Moroccan kefta Tagine with lemon and saffron butter sauce (aka fancy meatballs). Preparing these two dishes took all afternoon between the shopping and preparation but it was totally worth it because both turned out delicious. Also, I have said this before but I will say it again- I love cooking with my husband. It’s such a fun way to spend time with him. We both assume our roles in the kitchen- Brian the executive chef and me the always happy to help sous chef. Brian is just more confident at tackling big recipes than I am. Let’s be honest if I was alone I would have most likely panicked half way through the tagine dish and opened a bottle of chardonnay while dialing the nearest chinese restaurant.

Where I do shine though is setting the dining table. I went with a fall theme (it’s my favorite time of year after all!!) complete with tiny pumpkins, flint corn & gourds, oh and two tiny gold camels, which were party favors from The Garahan’s wedding in May. If I told you how much joy setting the table brought me you would probably laugh. It’s the little things in life, right?

The evening was perfection…oh and the food was AH-mazing. Rachel and PJ brought a beet (that was prepared with olive oil, lemon, salt, pepper, garlic & red onion), arugula, goat cheese & pistachios salad with a reduced balsamic salad dressing that knocked my socks off. Such simple ingredients but so flavorful. Loni & Mike brought a Moroccan carrot and quinoa salad that was not only beautiful to look at but so damn tasty- I devoured my plate of it (recipe found here) and for dessert they brought Moroccan date truffles which were tiny pieces of heaven!

dinner club

10 Feb

Many moons ago we started a dinner club with two of our favorite couples- Rachel & Pj and Mike & Loni. The plan was simple- once a month we would try a new restaurant picked by one of the couples. Our very first outing was to a Ethiopian restaurant called Messob on Fairfax. Have you ever tried Ethiopian food? It’s delicious and you get to eat with your hands…win win, if you ask me. Over the last two years dinner club has become one of my favorite traditions. Not only because we have eaten at some great restaurants around LA but because of how much these people add to my life. I recently found a picture from our first dinner club at Messob and it brought a smile to my face.

dinner clubSo much has changed since this picture was taken. Brian and I got married, Rachel and PJ got engaged & Mike and Loni welcomed baby Margot a few months ago! It’s been an incredible ride and through it all we have supported each other. We’ve become a little family of sorts and I am so thankful.

On Saturday night Brian and I hosted dinner club at our house because we wanted baby Margot to join. We ordered six different pizzas from Pitfire…Rachel and Pj brought a caesar salad with amazing homemade croutons, Mike & Loni brought a delicious homemade chocolate cake & Margot brought the cuteness. We passed around baby Margot (seriously, she made my ovaries hurt)…ate copious amounts of pizza (paleo, what?)…drank loads of wine (embarrassing amounts)…celebrated Mike’s birthday (with sparkler candles!)…and laughed. The room was filled with JOY.

This weekend is packed but it should be a fun one! Tonight my girlfriend, Taline is coming over for a night of food, wine, wedding talk (she’s also my maid of honor), tv and hanging. We are both in need of some quality time together. Tomorrow I finally start ballet classes. I’m reaaaaaally excited and slightly nervous I’ll make a fool of myself. It’s been twelve years since I’ve danced. Like riding a bike, right? That reminds me I have to buy ballet shoes this afternoon! After class I’m stopping over at my gorgeous cousins house for an afternoon glass of wine to celebrate her birthday. Then Brian and I are meeting our dinner club crew, Rachel & PJ and Loni & Mike for a night out on the town. For those of you who don’t know, once a month we pick a new restaurant to all go to. This month we picked Mercado, a mexican style restaurant in Santa Monica. Having dinner with this crew is something I look forward to every month! Then Sunday we are off to an easter brunch with Brian’s family and in the evening we are hosting a birthday party for my step-father, Irv.

What are you guys doing this weekend??
