The last stop on our honeymoon was five nights at the insanely gorgeous Alila Manggis located in East Bali- a quiet section of the island known for its lush forests and the active volcano, Mount Agung. After traveling for almost a month through Hanoi, Halong Bay, Ho Chi Minh, Ubud & Nusa Lembongan, we were both pretty exhausted from the non stop movement.

Our vacation was making us tired…take out the tiny violin, right?

Considering neither of us wanted to fly back to Los Angeles without our batteries fully recharged, we allowed ourselves to do the unthinkable for people like us…do absolutely nothing for the last leg of the trip. We fought it the first day, both feeling bad about not scheduling more things during our stay. We spent the first day by the pool sipping fruity cocktails and flipping through the hotels activity brochure in search of something. An afternoon of sailing? A scenic bike ride? A sunrise trek up Mount Agung? Although, I simply couldn’t fathom waking up at 3am to trek to the top of Mount Agung. Since we couldn’t settle on anything, we just kept sipping fruity cocktails by the pool. Normally, this would have been a pool/beach combo but this section of Bali isn’t known for its beaches. Transalation….there really isn’t a beach, especially at high tide. So we pooled it. I wasn’t disappointed though because the pool at Alila Manggis was epic. It begged to be sat by for five days straight. It would have been unfair to it if we didn’t.

Our daily routine was pretty solid…wake up by 9am…eat breakfast (which happened to be an amazing complimentary feast. It kept me full for most of the day)…go back to our room to change into our bathing suits and proceed to the pool to swim, read (I laughed and sobbed my way through “A Fault In Our Stars”), eat, drink & sleep, usually wrapping it up around five when we would go back to our hotel room to lounge around in bed until we got hungry for dinner.

We left the hotel grounds once…once!! How crazy is that? On day five we finally put the fruity cocktails down and ventured out for a little culture, a guided tour through Tenganan Village, which is often referred to as the original Bali.

The tour through the village will be up on the blog next!

well, hello 32!

14 Jul

I turned 32 last week- I am officially a woman in my 30’s! The celebration was pretty mellow this year…I went to a sweaty morning yoga class, spent the afternoon at the beach with my momma, got a mani/pedi and then Brian and I went out for sushi. It was a day filled with all my favorite things. As I am sure it goes with many people, my birthday always causes me reflect on the past year. The last year has been a wild ride. The highs include marrying Brian (I still pinch myself!), building a home, getting off the antidepressants I was taking for my anxiety (more on that in a later post), taking a month off to travel through Vietnam and Bali on our honeymoon, as well as a few epic weekend trips to Sedona and our mini moon in San Francisco and Tomales Bay, Frank (in general) and lastly watching so many of my dear friends get married, get pregnant and have babies.

The lows have included work stress (which invariably caused money stress), disappointing friendships, the separation of a couple that shocked me and the whole gallbladder saga. I feel like that silly surgery stole a few weeks from me, not to mention my digestion has been screwy ever since.

All in all 31 was pretty damn good to me. I have so much to be grateful for. When I look at my life I can’t believe how many things have fallen into place exactly the way I wanted. Is everything perfect? No. But is it ever? The last year has taught me that I am always going to be ok. No matter what. I am much more resilient then I give myself credit for.

I am still working on my goal list for this next year but until then here are a few of my favorite moments from 31.

T minus 21 days until our honeymoon!! Since I’ve been doing a lot of lying around since my surgery I’ve been spending a lot of time daydreaming about our honeymoon. I cannot wait to travel with Bri for a few weeks. We really need it. The last few months have been a crazy whirlwind…with some difficult moments/lessons sprinkled in. I need a break. I think I’ve already mentally checked out. I can almost feel the sand between my toes.

We just got confirmation that the villa in Ubud, Bali that I have been salivating over is available the dates we want. Yay! Isn’t it gorgeous?!

Maybe you’ve noticed by my lack of posting recently but I’ve been in a serious funk. Usually, my funks only last a day…at most a week, but this funk has really grown some roots. I’ve been buried by it and in turn I’ve been uninspired, pessimistic and just plain UN-fun. All of which is very unlike me. BLAH. But today for no reason at all I woke up feeling like my lighter, happy, connected and grateful self again. Making everything appear rosier despite nothing having changed. Ahhhh, perspective. It got me thinking about what actions and habits bring me joy each day. I decided to write them all down so I can be conscious of what I can do each day to make the world rosier and my heart lighter despite what else may be going on around me. It’s become clear to me that I haven’t been making a point to do a lot of these things recently and I’m starting to think that is part of the problem. Because I do believe we are responsible for keeping our side of the street clean.

My Daily Happy Recipe:

waking early – I fight this habit often because I love my cozy bed but I’ve realized that when I wake up early (think 6am instead of 730am) I feel better. It gives me some much-needed quiet time to get in touch with myself and set intentions for the day.

morning pages– have you ever read the book “The Artists Way”? It’s brilliant. One of my faves actually. One of the exercises in it is writing three pages of longhand, stream of consciousness first thing in the morning. They aren’t meant to be high art. They can be about anything and everything that crosses your mind– and they are for your eyes only. I used to do them often but haven’t in months and I miss them. They provoke, clarify, comfort, cajole, prioritize and synchronize the day at hand.

meditate – nuff’ said. Again, this helps set the tone for the day. It helps center my crazy & anxious mind.

long walk with Frankie – I love our morning walks together. They bring me so much simple joy. We see a lot of the same neighbors and pups each walk and I love saying hi to everybody. I love the fresh morning air. I love watching Frank sniff every flower. I love seeing little kids heading off to school. I love the newness in the air.

jamming in my car – I’ve been on a Pandora kick recently and I’m loving my morning dance sessions in my car. It’s hard to be in a funky mood when you’re dancing and singing in traffic. Also, there is something about music that can turn any mood around and helps keep it light and playful.

working – I actually really enjoy working. As much as I complain about certain aspects of fit modeling there are parts I really love about it. I love the people I work with, being part of the creative process and contributing. I’ve also always enjoyed being independent…so financially supporting myself brings me joy.

connecting with my family and friends – making a point to call the people I love to see how they are and honestly sharing how I am in the process. There is nothing better than being reminded we are not  islands.

writing – It’s pretty simple…If I don’t write something…ANYTHING..each day I don’t feel as fulfilled. Writing is my medicine.

moving – for me this means getting to a bar method class or a yoga class each day. It makes me feel like I am taking care of myself. I also always feel happier after I move my body. Yay Endorphins!

cooking dinner– who would have thought I would have this on my daily happy list a few years ago- NOT ME! But I’ve come to love the process of making dinner each night. I watch the news while I cook…usually with Frank at my feet waiting for something to drop. Cooking has become a moving meditation for me. I feel fulfilled by having a nice dinner on the table for the man I love who happens to work much longer hours than I do.

eating healthy– for me this is light on the dairy, sugar and gluten. I just feel better physically and mentally when I do…and what’s more important than that?

connecting with Bri emotionally & physically– sometimes life gets hectic and it can feel like we are two moving ships trying to manage everything. But I find that when I really make an effort to connect with him each day I feel happier…more complete. He’s not only my lover…he’s my best friend.

watching tv shows with Bri – It probably sounds a bit silly to put tv on my happy recipe list but there’s some seriously good shit on tv these days! I also love cuddling with Bri on the couch with Frankie at our feet chewing on his bone. It’s the only time of day our little family of three comes together.

reading– I love reading a bit before bed. It can be a great book or an article in a magazine and it doesn’t matter if it’s a one page or 100…it just matters that I make the time to read.

Sleep – I’ve come to realize that I am nothing without a good nights sleep. NOTHING. Sleeping a solid & peaceful eight hours is important to my head space and overall well- being.

Reading: Did you know that I am reading “The Goldfinch”??? Kidddding. I think I’ve mentioned it 100 times in the last two weeks. But seriously it’s that GOOD. I find myself thinking about the characters all day long…in the shower, in the car, at work, in bar method class…they are consuming my mind!

Thinking about: upcoming travel! Up first- my best girlfriend Rachel’s bachelorette in Napa at the end of March. I am beyond excited for the weekend. There is nothing better than celebrating people you love and adore during happy times in their life as well as girls trips in general. I am a fan of a girls weekend. Then on April 24th Bri and I are off on our one month honeymoon to Vietnam and Bali. Seriously, is this real life?? I’ve only dreamed of going to these places and now it’s becoming a reality. I am so grateful I found a man who loves travel as much as I do. We still have so much planning to do. We still haven’t booked a single hotel! We are staying in all weekend and buckling down on booking stuff.

Listening to: I’m on a “LCD Soundsystem” Pandora kick. I seem to love every song that it picks. They all make me want to DANCE. Also, listening to Frank play with his new squeaky ball. I have my mom to thank for this purchase. It’s seriously the most annoying sound in the world and he LOVES it. When I hide it from he becomes depressed and frantically searches every inch of the house for it. It’s sad to watch. It’s sitting in a drawer right now…I don’t have the heart to trash it.

Watching: House Of Cards, True Detective & The Americans…and when I start to feel too high brow I throw on Real Housewives of BH. Oh and of course I’ll be watching the Oscars this Sunday. I seriously look forward to it every year.

Loving: Our new kitchen island! We finally have a hug space to eat on…well we don’t have new counter stools yet but we are almost there. I can’t believe how much it has changed the space. The marble we had prior made the space feel cold but with our new wood top suddenly our super modern loft feels warm. I’m in love. I’m also in love with the rain we are getting in LA right now. My heaven.

oh, hello

26 Feb

sedona

Oh, hello there. Sorry I have been MIA the last week. My excuses are as follows…last week was a beyond shitty week. I got some disappointing & surprising news from one of my work accounts and it made everything feel difficult. It put me in a total tailspin. Then Brian had to leave town for a work trip to Oregon and Frank  behaved extra bratty while he was gone making the week feel even harder and making it feel impossible to do anything. Luckily, my other excuse for being absent is a good one…we spent four days in Sedona, AZ with some friends. It was exactly what the doctor ordered. I needed a little break from my everyday life (Frank included) and some R & R. I spent the four days either sleeping (I was the first one in bed every night), eating (I was on a Mexican food tour), drinking (prickly pear margaritas or white wine), hot tubbing & reading (I cannot get enough of the Goldfinch). Thankfully, I came back from the trip feeling lighter and more positive. With age I am learning to ride out the shitty days and weeks knowing from experience everything changes and usually rather quickly.

I know it’s only Wednesday and things could take a turn for the worse but this week has been a good one. Not only because I’m feeling more positive but also because today is Brian’s birthday and I can’t really be in a bad mood when it’s the love of my life’s birthday.

Happy Birthday to my favorite human. You make my world a happier place and I am so grateful for all that you do.  I couldn’t love you more and I am so happy you were born.

home : inspiration

5 Feb

As I mentioned earlier, one of my goals this year is to finish decorating our loft. It’s felt unfinished since we moved in. But last year was all about “project wedding” so our home took a backseat. The walls are mostly bare (despite being married to a beyond talented photographer who has tons of gorgeous photos), we don’t have a dining table (despite the fact I love to entertain…we have two stools at our kitchen island we eat at), our office looks like somebody ransacked it (it has become the place in our home we dump everything we don’t know what to do with) and our bedroom is pretty bare as well consisting of just the bed, a chair, a dresser and one piece of art. Clearly, it’s time to spruce the place up!

Our first project was the dining table but after going back and forth we’ve come to the conclusion we don’t really have space for one. Well, at least one that we would want. So we’ve decided to take out the existing marble counter on the island and put a much bigger wood top on it. One that has a huge lip around it so we can seat lots of people. Brilliant, huh? So now we are waiting patiently for the new wood top to be finished so we can have it installed. Patience is not a strong suit of mine. I’m already planning out dinner parties to throw the minute it is installed.

In the meantime I’ve been looking at pinterest for home inspiration ideas. When you look at my home board it is pretty clear what I like – neutral tones with bright pops of color & I’m a fan of ethnic rugs and prints. Luckily Brian likes most of my ideas expect he will NOT get behind my fabulous idea to paint the guest bathroom teal. Seriously, you would have thought I said “let’s have a baby!” with the look he gave me when I mentioned the color teal.

the mirror

20 Jan

photo-38

So, you know how I mentioned that Brian and I would be tackling a few home projects this weekend? Our biggest task being sanding a mirror down so we could repaint it a bright coral and transform our entry way. Transform it, people! Well, it didn’t really go according to plan. Actually, I would say our home looks worse from this weekends activities rather than better.

After spending Saturday morning at Home Depot (I hate that place in general, but on a Saturday..kill me) we returned home with sanding equipment, new hanging hardware, tape, paint & paint brushes. We were ready to tackle the mirror project! Considering, I have never sanded anything before I was unaware of how difficult it was and quickly learned I was going to have to put some serious muscle in to it. I also learned that this project was going to take much longer than I originally anticipated and that gloves would be required (I hate the feeling of dry dust). Once suited up with yellow kitchen gloves, I joined Brian to sand.

photo-40

photo-41

Sigh…I truly hated sanding. Every five minutes (alright two) I would huff and puff and complain to Brian about how much my arm hurt. He lovingly responded a few times, but then began to tune me out. Leaving me with no other option than to make up random excuses about why I had to go inside for a break…I had to feed the dog…I had to pee…was that my phone ringing? After awhile it was clear to both of us who would be finishing the sanding of the mirror that day. Brian finally called it quits at 3pm. The mirror was nearly striped but would need a bit more work before we could get to the fun part…PAINTING.

The next morning…I sucked it up, suited up in my gloves and poured myself a strong cup of coffee to help  Brian finish. An hour later it was finally time to paint!

We readied the outdoor area…taping paper down to the coffee table we would be painting on and unwrapping the paint brushes. When the area was ready Brian began to tape the mirrored edges and it was then I heard… “FUCK!”.

What?! What happened?!? I said calmly.

I peered over to where he sat and saw coral paint  (ooooo, that is a pretty color, I thought…really not to orange) pool out of the can and on to our cement patio and outdoor couch cover. Then I thought, SHIT and then I thought, thank God it wasn’t me who dropped it. The coral paint was not only all over our patio it was also spotted on Brian’s arms, clothes and shoes. I stood there with my mouth agape. I wasn’t even sure how best to help. It was bad.

photo-42

“Honey, what are you doing!? Grab the paper towels! Hurry!!”, he yelled.

I ran as fast as I could to the kitchen and when I returned with we tried our best to sop up as much coral paint as we could. It was then I noticed that with each step Brian took his paint covered shoes were spreading coral paint all over.

“Take off your shoes!” I said trying my best not to laugh.

Actually, It took all my might not to laugh in that moment, not because I wasn’t sad by the fact coral paint was seeping into the cement on our brand new patio, but because situations like this just make me laugh. I looked up and saw Frank peering out at us through the sliding glass doors…with a look that said…you fools…you fooooools.

photo-43

Thankfully the paint was water based and we were able to make good progress in cleaning with hot water and a sponge. Do we still have a pink circle on the patio? Yes. But, is it lighter? Yes. Maybe an outdoor rug is in order?

photo-44

As you can imagine, we decided to call it quits after the coral paint debacle. Not only because we were low on paint but also because we were both feeling a bit defeated.

Damn you mirror, Damn you. Until next weekend.
