In case you didn’t gather from the title of this blog, post summer isn’t my favorite season. This admission probably just garnered me some hate mail, but it’s the truth. When I told my mom and Brian my feelings about summer, they both looked at me as if I had just said something personally offensive to them. I guess people feel pretty strongly about summer. I’m not saying summer is all bad. I, too, enjoy long days, afternoon BBQ’s and the beach, but I find that I get tired of it all rather quickly and then I’m just hot…hot, drained and unfocused.
I much prefer the fall and winter months. I love fog. I love rain. I love bundling up in cozy sweaters. I love spending grey afternoons writing. I love the holidays. I love wearing boots. I love wearing leather jackets and scarves. I love crisp air. I love Christmas lights. I love fall movies. I love pumpkin spice lattes and gingerbread cookies. I love all things cozy. I do cozy really well. I also find that I feel more creative and alive in the fall and winter months and, well, I would welcome that feeling right about now.
While I know it’s not officially fall just yet, I have decided that now that it’s September, I’m going to act like it is. I’ve picked out soup recipes to make, changed my closet over to sweaters and boots, painted my nails grey, my toes blood-red and I even…dyed my hair brown! For some reason that felt like the biggest F-U to summer.
Kate McClafferty has brown hair now, Summer!
Not only do I love fall and winter but they are shaping up to be a pretty fun travel filled few months. We are heading to North Carolina at the end of September with Brian’s family for a wedding. While I have never met the people getting married, I do love a good wedding, enjoy traveling with Brian’s parents and I’ve never been to North Carolina before! Win, win, win. Then in October, I head to Ojai for a yoga retreat with my favorite yoga teacher and sweet friend Jennifer Pastiloff. Her “manifestation retreats” are known to be life-changing, amazing and FUN. I mean there is even going to be Karaoke yoga! Oh and wine. So again this is a win. Then, on November 2nd, Brian and I take off on our adventure to Nepal…with a stop in Hong Kong first! Hong Kong was a recent addition and I am excited about it. We have to stop there anyway on a layover and have decided to make a trip out of it. Why land in Hong Kong, and not see it right?? When we get back from our trip,(if I survive the 10 day trek) the craziness of the holidays begin- my absolute favorite time of year! Then, somehow, it will be 2013? WHAAAAAT?
Are you guys as excited for the change of seasons as I am???
Signed,
your brown-haired blogger friend Kate
My sentiments EXACTLY.
The change in seasons also brings you a new little baby!! Exciting:)
I am with you Kate, my seasons Fall, Spring and Winter! I breathe better in those months, i like the fall and wearing turtle necks some coats brisk walks outdoors. I have MS and sometimes the heat does us in and with COPD, those three months work wonders for me, as i can breathe easier and enjoy outdoors! P.S. You hair looks great! Have a good time in NC, i hope next summer to be living down south somewhere! Liked the post, take care my sister!
A) Hilarious title!!! I laughed out loud. And then immediately felt offended and shocked like bri and your momma…. you hate summer? whaaaaaa?? the things we learn about friends through their blogs….
B) OK. I’m ready to accept fall now. And I actually DO agree with you: boots, foamy lattes, overcast beach morning walks, “smurf hats” (as PJ calls them) soups … favorite things. And you know how excited I am about a winter coat and gloves! Plus cold weather is better work weather.
C) I am jeally of your next several months. 2013 is killing it already!
D) I LURVE YOUR HAIR!!
xx
Perhaps it’s because I live in Austin, Texas where Summer seems to last for SIX months…but, I’m with you lady! Fall (blink and you’ll miss it in Texas) and Winter can’t come any sooner! And your hair looks lovely!
~lisa
Ahhh the summer heat in Austin is a rough one! I probably have no right complaining about heat!! I have never been to Austin in the winter…I bet it’s lovely.
Oh, I hear this! We’ve had a miserably hot summer here in Chicago, even today the high is 88 (GRUMBLES) and I am soooo looking forward to cozy, cozy fall! (Winter, as you can imagine, is no treat in Chicago, but fallll is my favorite – that, and the holidays). Can’t wait for leaves, apples, apple-pie making, pumpkin-spice lattes… *sigh of happiness*
while i too, prefer the fall season (football, cooler weather(kinda in Texas), The Texas Renaissance Festival)….as a school teacher….it’s hard not to love the time off in the summer…..
It totally makes sense why you would be a summer lover!! What subject do you teach??
I hope this is the last year i teach computer tech classes (middle school)….i’ve taken my history certification and i hope next year i can move into that subject…..technology is slowly passing me by and i’m too old to want to learn any more…..
I’m a summer-lover but I can agree that it feels a little unfocused and too busy with all the fun happening. The hair looks incredible and I can’t wait to see it in person!
P.S. Jenn is doing a workshop at Pop Physique on 9/15 from 5:00-8:00p if you wanna pre-Ojai fix!
You look gorgeous!! And I’m with you. Fall is where it’s at. 🙂
Thanks Daynna!!! 🙂
Gah! Summer! It is on the way out, but oh how lovely it has been. Maybe it’ll linger just a little longer? (but please with a tad less of the sauna we’ve had…)
No wonder you liked all my complaints about the heat on Facebook! I must confess, I feel a tiny bit betrayed when one of my fellow blondes goes dark, but I find myself glad for the fall as well and look forward to preschool mornings when I have a bit more time and space for reading great blog posts from Kate McClafferty the brown haired wonder writer! 🙂
No wonder you liked my complaints about the heat on Facebook! I must confess, I feel a tiny bit betrayed when one of my fellow blondes goes dark, but I will nurse my wounds by enjoying my kids at school leaving me with some time and space for keeping up on blog posts by Kate McClafferty the brown haired wonder writer!
Ha! Now you know why I was liking all your heat related posts! Thanks Rebecca for your sweet words. I always look forward to your comments.
I think you are a hoot and I love keeping up with you..between you and Nik your mother must have the patience of a saint.
I like your hair a lot. You couldn’t look bad no matter what.
My mother does have the patience of a saint!! Ha. Hope you are well Darlyn. So happy to have you as a reader:)
I ‘m not a summer fan either. I’m from Canada and where I live it gets so humid…I love fall and the changing leaves and winter days that are so sunny they are blinding, the sky is so blue those days and I love getting snow on Christmas day 🙂
I’m jealous you get snow on Christmas Day!! 🙂
Something strange is happening with WordPress in that your posts are not showing up in my “reader,” so I missed this one and perhaps others. Anyway, just wanted to say that I too am a great fan of fall and winter. Autumn is the best time of year as far as I’m concerned. For some people it signals the end: the end of summer, of time off, of all the outdoor fun. But it’s also such a great time of renewal and change, so much good energy, so much to look forward to. And rainy days in winter, sitting by the wood stove – not a whole lot better than that.
Take care, Kate, and thanks for the great post.
Yup…me too on liking the “other” seasons. Now you’re gonna make me go fetch my long sleevs and jackets from the back of the closet – woohoo!
